Abolition of Jizya

Abolition of Jizya

The Holy Prophet Muhammadsaw prophesied:

Narrated Abu Huraira:Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “The Hour will not be established until the son of Mary descends amongst you as a just ruler, he will break the cross, kill the pigs, and abolish the Jizya tax. Money will be in abundance so that nobody will accept it (Sahih Bukhari, Volume 3, Book 43, Hadith #656)

The next sign which will be discussed is the abolition of Jizya. Firstly, jizya is a tax. The jizya was not to be forcefully collected. It was a tax paid willingly as a favor for the protection of the State. Mirza Bashiruddin Mahmud Ahmad, Second Khalifa of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, notes:

The expression ‘with their own hand’ is used here in a figurative sense, signifying (1) that Jizya should not be forcibly taken from the People of the Book but that they should pay it with their own hand i.e. they should agree to pay it willingly…; or (2) that they should pay it out of hand, i.e.  in ready money and not in the form of deferred payment; or (3) that they should pay it considering it as a favor from Muslims, the word, yad (hand) also meaning a favor.

Whenever there was an Islamic state, and a military threat came into existence, which would interfere with the peace of the state, this tax was a must for the non Muslims. It is a main characteristic which comes up during a religious war. When the Holy Prophetsaw prophesied that the latter day messiah would abolish jizya, this referred to the putting aside of religios wrs for his time. This shows us that uring the time of the Messiah, the Muslims would have religious freedom and would be allowed to practice and preach their faith. No one would wage a war against Islam during that time, which is why Muslims would not be required to reply with the sword. During the time of the Messiah, Islam was to be spread by the pen and through peace. This does not mean that in the past Islam was spread by the sword, rather means Muslims would not be attacked in the way they were before, which is the real reason the sword would not be raised. In the age of the Messiah and in todays age, Islam is being attacked by the pen, and it is our duty to reply with the pen rather than with the sword.

The Holy Prophetsaw stated in regards to this hadith:

الحرب يضع

“He would bring an end to the religious wars” (Fathull Bari)

Ahmadas states:

“‘As to the means and arrangements to be used, whether for physical warfare or spiritual warfare, whether the battle is by sword or by the pen, the following verse is sufficient for our guidance: ‘Make ready for them whatever force you can.’ In this verse God empowers us to employ against the enemy all suitable means and to use the method which we consider to be most effective.”(Ruhani Khazain Volume 14, Page 454, Haqeeqatul Mahdi page 28)

Heas also states:

“I have come to you with an order: jihad with the sword has ended from this time forward, but the jihad of purifying your souls must continue. I do not say this of my own accord. This is indeed the will of God. Recall the hadith from Sahih al-Bukhari which honours the Promised Messiah by saying yada-‘ul-harb. That is to say, when the Messiah comes he will put an end to religious wars. Accordingly, I command those who have joined my ranks to refrain from all such thoughts, to purify their hearts, to foster sympathy, and to be compassionate towards the suffering. They should spread peace on earth, because that will cause their faith to spread in return. They should not entertain doubts about how this will transpire.” (British Government And Jihad, Page 17)

And:

“The abolition of Jizyah is self-explanatory. It only means that Jizyah will no longer be required. Human hearts will spontaneously respond to the truth, rendering recourse to war unnecessary. Winds of change will blow and people will flock to enter the fold of Islam. The gates will be flung wide open; it will be an influx en masse. As a result, Jizyah will become obsolete, for no one will be left to pay it” (Elucidation of Objectives, Page 12)
