5 Volumes Instead of 50?

There are many allegations raised on Hadhrat Ahmadas‘s work called Barahin-e-Ahmadiyya. Before I answer the allegation, it is important to see what the opponents of Hadhrat Ahmadas had said about this beautiful work which was written in the defense of Islam.

Muhammad Hussain Batalvi stated:

“Now, we desire to express our views on Barahin-e-Ahmadiyyah very briefly and without exaggeration. In our opinion, in light of the state of affairs of this era, this book is such that to this day a book of this stature has not been written in the history of Islam. And the author of this book (i.e., the Promised Messiahas has proven his devotion to Islam by such help with money, life, pen, tongue, conduct and writings, the like of which has seldom been found among the Muslims.”(Isha’atus Sunnah Volume 6, page 6)

Sufi Mir Abbas Ali Shah wrote:

“I smell the fragrance of prophethood from the writings of this book”

The first two parts of this beautiful book were published in 1880. The third part followed in 1882, while the fourth part was published in 1884. There were many difficulties in the publication of the book from the manager of the Safir-e-Hind Press, Amirtsar. The fourth part was delayed so that Hadhrat Ahmadas could respond to the criticism which had been levelled at the previous parts and it may have also been delayed due to the death of his elder brother, Mirza Ghulam Qadir, in 1883.

The fifth part of Barahin-e-Ahmadiyya appeared in 1905, but was a new book altogether, rather than a continuation of the original. The other parts were completed by 1879 and consisted of 300 arguments but not all published. The first four parts which are printed, only contain one of the original 300 arguments. However, there are millions of other arguments in Barahin-e-Ahmadiyya for the truth of Islam. Hadhrat Ahmadas stated:

“People said that the promise of giving arguments mentioned in Baraheen is not fulfilled. Though, there are millions of arguments in Baraheen, for the truth of Islam” (Malfuzat, Volume 5, pg 206)

Hadhrat Ahmadas was not able to publish the entire manuscript because the events of his life took an entirely different turn as he was commissioned by Allah as the reformer of his age. Allah Gave Hadhrat Ahmadas an entirely different task and this was much greater for Islam. Hadhrat Ahmadas gave better proofs for the superiority of Islam and the old arguments were no longer required. Hadhrat Ahmadas took good care of the manuscript which was unpublished, but despite this, t was accidentally burnt and destroyed.

This book had a lot of success and defended Islam in a way no one could have imagined. However, despite this, the opponents raise many allegations against this beautiful publication. They firstly say that Hadhrat Ahmadas had lied about the publication of this book.

Hadhrat Ahmadas intended to publish Barahin-e-Ahmadiyya Part 5 consisting of 300 arguments. However, when four parts were published, Allah appointed him as the reformer of the age and this caused his mission to take a complete turn. There is nothing with a pledge being changed, if the circumstances are changed. In the Qur’an we see that Allah Promises paradise to all male and female believers. However, if they become apostates and leave Islam, despite them having that earlier promise from God, they would be held accountable and be punished. In the same way if a Hindu had the promise of hellfire, but accepts Islam, then the promise would become a promise of paradise because of the change which he brought within himself.

The ahadith further support this concept as well. It is narrated in Bukhari:

Narrated Salim’s father:

Once Gabriel promised the Prophet (that he would visit him, but Gabriel did not come) and later on he said, “We, angels, do not enter a house which contains a picture or a dog.” (Sahih al Bukhari, Hadith #3227)

In this narration, we see that Hadhrat Jibrael promised the Prophetsaw that he would visit him, but did not end up visiting that day. This does not mean that Hadhrat Jibrael God forbid told a lie.

We also see similar, with the story of Hudaibiyya. The Holy Prophetsaw had a dream that he would do Hajj, and told his companions this dream as well. They even set forth to perform the pilgrimage, but later found out that this was not the year, in which they would physically perform the pilgrimage. The Prophet Muhammadsaw later found out that Allah had other plans for him, and the Treaty of Hudaibiyya was agreed to.

We see another example from Sahih al-Bukhari where an oath was made by the Prophet Muhammad (sa) and then later changed because of what Allah the Almighty had planned. It is narrated:

Narrated Zahdam:

Once we were in the house of Abu Musa who presented a meal containing cooked chicken. A man from the tribe of Bani Taim Allah with red complexion as if he were from the Byzantine war prisoners, was present. Abu Musa invited him to share the meal but he (apologised) saying. “I saw chickens eating dirty things and so I have had a strong aversion to eating them, and have taken an oath that I will not eat chickens.” Abu Musa said, “Come along, I will tell you about this matter (i.e. how to cancel one’s oath). I went to the Prophet (ﷺ) in the company of a group of Al-Ashariyin, asked him to provide us with means of conveyance. He said, ‘By Allah, I will not provide you with any means of conveyance and I have nothing to make you ride on.’ Then some camels as booty were brought to Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) and he asked for us saying. ‘Where are the group of Al-Ash`ariyun?’ Then he ordered that we should be given five camels with white humps. When we set out we said, ‘What have we done? We will never be blessed (with what we have been given).’ So, we returned to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said, ‘We asked you to provide us with means of conveyance, but you took an oath that you would not provide us with any means of conveyance. Did you forget (your oath when you gave us the camels)? He replied. ‘I have not provided you with means of conveyance, but Allah has provided you with it, and by Allah, Allah willing, if ever I take an oath to do something, and later on I find that it is more beneficial to do something different, I will do the thing which is better, and give expiation for my oath.”

(Sahih al-Bukhari, vol. 4, Book 53, Hadith #361)

Hadhrat Ahmadas has stated:’

“In the beginning, when I wrote this book, the situation was very different from now. Thereafter, the sudden manifestation of the providence of Allah [the Almighty] made me, the humblest of men, aware— like Musa [Moses]—of a world which I was totally unaware of before. In other words, this humble one was also wandering, like Hadrat Ibne-Imran, in the dark night of my own ideas during which I once heard the voice from the unseen, إنِّي آنَا رَبُّكَ Verily, I am your Lord’], and such mysteries were then revealed [to me] as were beyond the reach of reason and imagination. Therefore, the Lord of all the worlds is now the Guardian and Manager of this book, both manifestly and intrinsically. I have no knowledge of His will as to its size and volume. The reality is that the extent to which the blessings of the divine origin of Islam have been manifested up to Part IV is sufficient as conclusive arguments. I hope that with His grace and munificence, He will continue to grace me with His support from the unseen until He totally dissipates the darkness of doubts and suspicions.

Although my humble self is not sure about my own life, I am extremely glad that the Self-Subsisting and All-Sustaining, who is free from destruction and death, is the Supporter of the religion of Islam until the Day of Judgment and that His grace upon Khatamul Anbiya’ [the Seal of the Prophets], may peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, is such as has never been bestowed upon any Prophet before.

Here, I am obligated to thank those good-natured believers who have supported the publication of this book to this very day. May Allah the Almighty shower His mercy upon all of them; and, for every single moment in which they exerted efforts to support His Faith [of Islam] with their heartfelt love, may God the Benevolent bestow grace upon them in the very same manner

Some people have considered this book to be merely a matter of financial give and take, whereas God has opened the hearts of others and established their hearts upon sincerity and goodwill. But the latter category, until now, consists of those who have very limited financial resources. The same has been the way of Allah with His holy Prophets, that only the weak and the indigent initially inclined towards them. If it is the desire of Allah the Almighty, He will also open the heart of some resourceful person to bring this task to its conclusion.” (Barahin-e-Ahmadiyya, Part 4, Page 442)

The next allegation which the anti Ahmadis raise, is on the money people had spent on Barahin-e-Ahmadiyya. The anti Ahmadis say that Hadhrat Ahmadas took money from the people, and did not return it but this is completely false.

Hadhrat Ahmadas stated:

“If I have taken the money of Barahin-e-Ahmadiyya from you, then you are accountable to God, to whom you will be presented, that send me back the four parts of Barahin-e-Ahmadiyya, and take your money.” (Arbain 4, Ruhani Khazain, Volume 17, Page 457)

“Any person who has any complaints regarding this issue can contact me by post and I will  arrange for the money to be returned to them. I will delegate someone in their area to take  the books back and return them their money. I also forgive them for all their abuses and  slander upon me for the sake of Allah because I don’t want anyone to be punished in the  hereafter for this. In a situation, where the buyer of the book has passed away, and their children would like their money back, then they can get it in the same way.” (Majmua Ishtiharat)

Even an opponent named Doctor Abdul Karim Khan admit that Hadhrat Ahmadas returned the money, to all those who asked. He stated:

“He has been liberated by all as he has returned the full amount to 150 men” (Al Dhikr-ul-Hakim, Page 6)

Then next allegation which the opponents raise is that he had not written 300 arguments for the support of Islam. This is completely false. Barahin-e-Ahmadiyya spoke of the great teachings of Islam and its millions of miracles. Both comprise of millions of signs.
Hadhrat Ahmadas himself stated:
“I initially intended to write 300 arguments to prove the truthfulness of Islam. However, when I considered this, I realized that these two types of signs themselves, contain thousands of signs. Therefore, Allah the Almighty, changed my mind regarding this and inspired me to write these arguments written below” (Barahin-e-Ahmadiyya, Part 5, Page 5)

Furthermore, Hadhrat Ahmadas wrote over 90 books, which contain millions of arguments for the truth of Islam.

The anti Ahmadis also quote Hadhrat Ahmadas for saying:

“I intended to write 50 parts for Barahin-e-Ahmadiyya, but relied only on five because the difference is only of one dot between fifty and five, thus the promise is fulfilled by these fifty parts” (Barahin-e-Ahmadiyya Part 5, Ruhani Khazain Volume 21, Page 6)

This in reality is an allegation against our beloved Prophet, Hadhrat Muhammadsaw and Our God, Allah the Almighty. This calculation was taught by Allah the Almighty. The hadith states:

فَقَالَ هِيَ خَمْسٌ وَهْىَ خَمْسُونَ

During the Miraj, when the Holy Prophetsaw spoke to Mosesas and returned to Allah the Almighty for the last time to reduce the prayers, Allah Stated : “These five are in reality fifty” (Sahih Bukhari, Volume 1, Book 8, Hadith #345)

This allegation has no truth to it. If the opponents dared to read Barahin-e-Ahmadiyya and the books of Hadhrat Ahmadas, they would never dare to raise allegations against Allah’s Prophet!
