Muhammadi Begum, A Prophecy Fulfilled

The Reality of Muhammadi Begum, A Prophecy Fulfilled
One of the allegations of the anti Ahmadi Muslims which is often raised is in regards to the prophecy of Mirza Ahmad Baig. This prophecy was indeed fulfilled. However, it is important to read the entire background to completely understand this beautiful prophecy.

Firstly, we must understand that it is the way of Allah the Almighty that whenever a people leave the path of righteousness and turn towards misguidance and disobedience, and become deserving of the punishment of Allah, after much respite, Allah Sends them a final warning which overtakes them. This final warning is given by Allah in the form of an order or commandment, which at times seems quite small. However, disobedience to it brings the punishment of Allah and there is no escape.

Allah the Almighty States in the Holy Qur’an:ra
وَإِذَا أَرَدْنَا أَنْ نُهْلِكَ قَرْيَةً أَمَرْنَا مُتْرَفِيهَا فَفَسَقُوا فِيهَا فَحَقَّ عَلَيْهَا الْقَوْلُ فَدَمَّرْنَاهَا تَدْمِيرًا {17}

And when We intend to destroy a township, We address Our commandment to its rebellious people, but they transgress therein; so the sentence of punishment becomes due against it, and We destroy it with utter destruction. (Chapter 17 Verse 17)

The people of Hadhrat Salih (as) were also given the same warning. Allah States in Surah al Shams of the Qur’an:

فَقَالَ لَهُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ نَاقَةَ اللَّهِ وَسُقْيَاهَا {14} فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَعَقَرُوهَا فَدَمْدَمَ عَلَيْهِمْ رَبُّهُمْ بِذَنْبِهِمْ فَسَوَّاهَا {15} وَلَا يَخَافُ عُقْبَاهَا {16}

Then the Messenger of Allah said, ‘Leave alone the she-camel of Allah, and let her drink.’ But they rejected him and hamstrung her, so their Lord destroyed them completely because of their sin, and made it (destruction) overtake all of them alike. And He cared not for the consequences thereof. (Chapter 91, Verses 14-16)

We see that Allah the Almighty followed His way even with the near relatives of Hadhrat Ahmad(as). Ahmad Baig and his family denied the existence of Allah. They cursed at the Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw) and disrespected the Qur’an. They were lead astray by many Hindu traditions. They believed that it was unlawful to marry a relative as well, and that marrying a cousin is equivalent to marrying one’s sister God Forbid. It is for this reason that they would also mock the Holy Prophet (saw) for marrying Hadhrat Zainab(ra). Due to the disobedience and mockery of these people, Allah the Exalted gave the relatives of Hadhrat Ahmad(as) one final chance in the form of a commandment similar to Hadhrat Salih(as). Allah Stated that Ahmad Baig should marry his daughter Muhammadi Begum to Hadhrat Ahmad(as) and that this wedlock would bring about blessings. As we know, Allah States:

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اتَّقُوا اللَّهَ وَكُونُوا مَعَ الصَّادِقِينَ {119}

O Ye who believe! Fear Allah and be with the righteous. (Chapter 9 Verse 119)
The marriage of Hadhrat Ahmad(as) and Muhammadi Begum was unlawful according to Ahmad Baig and his family. Allah Used this commandment of His for their reformation. We find a similar example in the life of the Prophet Muhammad (saw) where he was instructed to marry the divorced widow of the Zaid(ra) who was the foster son of the Prophet(saw). Allah States:

فَلَمَّا قَضَىٰ زَيْدٌ مِنْهَا وَطَرًا زَوَّجْنَاكَهَا لِكَيْ لَا يَكُونَ عَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِينَ حَرَجٌ فِي أَزْوَاجِ أَدْعِيَائِهِمْ إِذَا قَضَوْا مِنْهُنَّ وَطَرًا ۚ وَكَانَ أَمْرُ اللَّهِ مَفْعُولًا {38}

Then, when Zaid had accomplished his want of her so as to have no further need of her, We joined her in marriage to thee, so that there may be no hindrance for the believers with regard to the wives of their adopted sons, when they have accomplished their want of them. And Allah’s decree must be fulfilled. (Chapter 33 Verse 38)

In the same way that Allah Instructed the Prophet Muhammad (sa) to marry Hadhrat Zainab(ra), in order to correct a false notion of the Arabs, Allah Ordered Hadhrat Ahmad(as) to send a proposal to Ahmad Baig for his daughter to remove their Hindu ideologies and so it may serve as a sign from Allah the Almighty.
Another wisdom in this was that Allah wanted to reform them and it’s obvious that physical relation can lead to the reformation of the family of the wife. We see that Hadhrat Umme Habibah (ra) daughter of Abu Sufyan and Saudah bint Zam’a (ra) to the Holy Prophet(saw) lead to the families entering Islam. This was a final command to completely convey the message to Mirza Ahmad Baig and his family.

Moving forward, we now see the way of the enemies of the Prophets. The prophecy Hadhrat Ahmad(as) made was a great one and it was fulfilled word for word. Hadhrat Ahmad(as) stated:

“We have clearly proven the reason as to why the death of Sultan Muhammad has been delayed in a separate announcement in such a manner that no trustworthy individual can put forth an excuse in accepting it. Those who have no faith can say as they wish. It should be remembered that this prophecy has been fulfilled with all its glories and no intelligent individual can deny this”
Those who Feared Allah and were righteous, accepted this sign of Hadhrat Ahmad(as) and many family members of his joined Ahmadiyyat. However, the scholars of this day and the anti Ahmadis act in the same way as the opponents of Hadhrat Muhammad (saw). The Qur’an States:

فَلَمَّا قَضَىٰ زَيْدٌ مِنْهَا وَطَرًا زَوَّجْنَاكَهَا

Then, when Zaid had accomplished his want of her so as to have no further need of her, we joined her in marriage to thee (in the heavens) (Chapter 33 Verse 38)

Thus Allah The Almighty also used the words زَوَّجْنَاكَهَا when he addressed Hadhrat Ahmad(as) in regards to Muhammadi Begum. Let us now turn to the prophecy in detail.

The opponents love to take things out of context and rush to say that the prophecy was not fulfilled since the marriage did not take place. They forget to look at the prophecy itself nor do they investigate it. Firstly, we need to understand the purpose of this prophecy.

Hadhrat Ahmad(as) states:

“Verily, Allah found my cousins and other relatives (Ahmad Baig, etc) indulged in harmful thoughts and deeds, and found them immersed in shameful traditions, false ideologies and innovations in the faith. And found that they are the ones to follow their base desires and lusts. And they reject the being of Allah and are among those who cause disorder” (Aina Kamalat-e-Islam)

He also states:
“These people are staunch disbelievers of Allah and His Messenger and they do not believe in the decree of Allah, rather they are atheists”(Aina Kamalat-e-Islam, age 568)

Hadhrat Ahmad(as) has given a beautiful incident in this same book which proves how atheistic they were. He states:

“One night it so happened that I was sitting in my home, when a man came to me weeping. I became worried and inquired, “Have you been informed of the death of someone?” He responded, “No, even greater so!”. I was sitting with those people who have reverted from the religion of Allah. One of them cursed at the Prophet (saw) in such a filthy and offensive manner that I have never heard the like of it from the mouth of any disbeliever. Moreover, I saw that they placed the Holy Qur’an beneath their feet and stepped on it. They were uttering such vile words that the tongue becomes filthy even by writing them. And they were saying that the being of Allah is nothing and there is no God in this world. This is merely a lie which the fabricators have concocted. I said to him “Did I not tell you that you should not sit with such people?” So fear God, and do not sit with them again and repent” They mock Allah and His Messenger and say that God Forbid, the Qur’an was fabricated by the Prophet Muhammad (saw) and that he was an apostate”

The family of Ahmad Baig had exceeded all bounds and did not believe in the Prophet Muhammad (saw) nor Allah. They were full of arrogance and addressed the Messiah saying:

“Bring forth to us a sign, if you are among the truthful”

Hadhrat Ahmad(as) wrote:

“They wrote a letter in which they had cursed the Holy Prophet(saw) and the Holy Qur’an. They had rejected the being of Allah, Exalted by His Name, and demanded from me a sign of my truthfulness. They circulated this letter far and wide and the non Muslims of India (Christians) greatly helped them in this cause and they greatly exceeded the bounds”

The letter sent to Hadhrat Ahmad(as) was published in Chashma-e-Nur August 1885. Upon this Hadhrat Ahmad(as) prayed for a powerful sign for his truth. Hadhrat Ahmad(as) referred to this in Aina-e-Kamalat-e-Islam in the following words:

“And I said, O My Lord! Help your servant and disgrace your enemies”

In response to this Allah the Almighty gave the Promised Messiah(as) the sign which they were waiting for. The following words were revealed:

“Verily, I have seen their disobedience and rebellion. Hence, I shall soon annihilate them by various afflictions and I shall destroy them under the heavens. And you shall soon see how I deal with them. And We have power over all things. I shall make their women widows, and their children orphans and their homes abandoned so that they may taste the consequences of their words and actions. But I shall not destroy them in a single strike, rather, gradually, so that they may return and become of those who repent. And my curse shall descend upon them, and upon the walls of their house, and upon their young ones and their elders and their women and their men and their guests who enter through their doors and all of them shall be among the accursed”

This prophecy itself shows that the revelation given to Hadhrat Ahmad(as) was that Allah the Exalted had given the option for repentance in the prophecy. For this reason Allah Stated:

“I shall not destroy them in a single strike, rather gradually so that they may return and become of those who repent”

Hadhrat Ahmad(as) elaborated that if Mirza Ahmad Baig married his daughter Muhammadi Begum to Hadhrat Ahmad(as), then as a result of this wedlock, Muhammadi Begum and her family would partake in blessings from the heavens as the family of Ummi Habibah and Hadhrat Saudah did. The families and tribes of both joined Islam. This wedlock was therefore a blessing.

Hadhrat Ahmad(as) explained that if Mirza Ahmad Baig refused to marry his daughter to the Messiah(as), he would die within three years of marrying Muhammadi Begum to someone else, and the person to whom Muhammadi Begum would be wed, would also die 2 1/2 years following the marriage. Hence, after becoming a widow, Muhammadi Begum would then marry the Messiah.

Hadhrat Ahmad(as) stated according to knowledge from Allah:

“That ever powerful and wise God said to me that you should put forth a marriage proposal for the daughter of this individual (Mirza Ahmad Baig), and tell them that you shall receive kindness and good treatment as a result of the fulfillment of this condition. And this marriage shall be a source of blessings for you and a sign of mercy. And you shall partake in all the mercy and blessings specified in the announcement of 20th February 1886. However, if you refuse, the outcome of this lady will be very unpleasant, and her father will die within 3 years of the marriage”

Along with this revelation, Hadhrat Ahmad(as) was also told that Ahmad Baig would indeed marry his daughter to someone else. He received the revelation:

“They rejected our signs and they would mock at them. Allah would suffice thee against them and return her to you”

Both of these revelations make it clear that the girl will definitely be married to someone else. They would reject the Will of Allah and marry the girl to someone else. The sect revelation explicitly states that she would marry someone else, as Allah uses the words “Yarudduha”. It also indicates that Ahmad Baig and others would be destroyed if they do not repent.

“But I shall not destroy them in a single strike, rather, gradually, so that they may return and become of those who repent”

“And if they do not repent Allah will send an affliction upon them, until they are destroyed, their houses will be filled with widows and wrath would descend on their walls, however, if they repent than Allah would have mercy on them” (Ishtihar, 20th February 1886, Zamimah Akhbar Riaz Hindh Amritsar, March 1886, Aina Kamalat-e-Islam)

Therefore the condition of repentance is clearly mentioned. It states that if they do not repent, then the wrath of Allah would descend. However, if they repent, Allah would have mercy on them.

The third proof that the prophecy did contain the condition of repentance can be found in the following revelation of Hadhrat Ahmad(as):

I saw this lady (the grandmother of Muhammadi Begum) in a vision, the signs of weeping were evident upon her face. I said to her, O Lady! Repent! Repent! Affliction has befallen your children and misfortune is about to descend upon you. One man shall die and dogs shall remain behind barking” (Announcement 15 July 1888, Footnote and Tabligh-e-Risalat, Volume 1, Page 120)

The words “O Lady! Repent! Repent!” show that there was a condition of repentance in the prophecy which was to afflict the family of Muhammadi Begum. If we leave aside the major sins, we know that smaller sins can be forgiven through the prayers of others. For example we pray that “O Our Lord, Forgive me and my parents” (14:42)

We have also been taught the prayer for the spiritual advancement of our progeny:

“My Lord make me observe Prayer and my children as well”

The grandmother of Muhammadi Begum was addressed and told that the door to repentance is open so much so that even the prayer of the grandmother could remove this calamity. Therefore, it shows us that this prophecy did not say Hadhrat Ahmad(as) would for certain marry her. Instead, the prophecy stated that if Ahmad Baig and Sultan Muhammad did not repent, each of them would die in 3 years. 3 years for Ahmad Baig and 2 1/2 for Sultan Muhammad, if he would not repent.

Thus Hadhrat Ahmad(as) wrote in an announcement of the 20th of February, 1886:

“Allah has manifested this prophecy as a sign for the opponents and denying relatives, that if the person named Ahmad Baig does not give me his older daughter in marriage, then he would pass away within three years, or indeed before that: and whosoever he marries her to would die within 2 1/2 years and ultimately she would come into my wedlock”

Another revelation of Hadhrat Ahmad(as) which proves that Muhammadi Begum would only marry the Promised Messiah9as) in the case of the death of both the father and the husband is as follows:

یَمُوْتُ بَعْلُھَا وَاَبُوْھَا اِلٰی ثَلَاثِ سَنَۃٍ مِنْ یَوْمِ النِّکَاحِ ثُمَّ نَرُدُّھَا اِلَیْکَ بَعْدَ مَوْتِھِمَا

“Her husband and father would die within three years after Muhammadi Begum’s marriage and after the death of both, we shall return her to you”

Another reference shows us that the prophecy of marriage was not the actual prophecy, rather the real prophecy was about the death of Ahmad Baig and Sultan Muhammad.

“The actual purport was destruction, and my marriage to the girl would follow their death, and that was only to highlight the greatness of this sign in the eyes of the people” (Anjam-e-Atham, Page 216)

Thus it is proven that the prophecy was that if Mirza Sultan Muhammad and Ahmad Baig do not repent, they would die within three years and following their death, Hadhrat Ahmad(as) would marry Muhammadi Begum.

At this point, the question arises that Allah the Almighty told Hadhrat Ahmad(as) in this prophecy that if Mirza Ahmad Baig and Mirza Sultan Muhammad do not repent, they shall be punished and thus, die within three years of the marriage of Muhammadi Begum. However, if this prophecy is true and Allah the Almighty has all knowledge, then He should have specified somewhere as to whether Muhammadi Begum’s family would benefit from the condition of repentance? The answer to this question is in the revelation which was already mentioned. It was said:

“O Lady! Repent! Repent! Affliction has befallen your children, and misfortune is about to descend upon you. (Out of one of two men Muhammad Baig and Sultan Muhammad) one man shall die (meaning the marriage will not then happen) and dogs shall remain behind barking”

From this revelation of Hadhrat Ahmad(as), it is evident that among Ahmad Baig and Sultan Muhammad, one of the two would not benefit from the condition of repentance and the other would benefit and be saved from the wrath of God.

The Arabic word “Yamutu” is singular for “one man shall die”. The following conclusions are raised:

1. Mirza Ahmad Baig would not accept the proposal of Hadhrat Ahmad(as) and would marry his daughter to someone else in direct disobedience of the command from Allah. The words “she will be returned to you” support this because if the father of Muhammadi Begum was to agree to marry his daughter to the Messiah(as), there would be no question of “returning her to thee” as mentioned in the prophecy.

2. After the father of Muhammadi Begum married her to someone else, if her father and husband do not repent, they would die within 3 years following the marriage. This conclusion is supported by the announcement of 20 February 1886 stating that if the two did not repent “within a period of three years Mirza Ahmad Baig and his son in law would die, and in this case, Muhammadi Begum would become a widow and be married to me”

3. Between Mirza Ahmad Baig and Mirza Sultan Muhammad, one of the two would not repent and thus meet his terrible end

4. One of the two would benefit from the stipulated condition of repentance and thus be saved from the wrath of God. The conclusion of points 3 and 4 is supported by the Arabic word “Yamutu” which refers to one male only.

5. Due to the natural outcome of point 4, one of the two would repent, and therefore Muhammadi Begum would not become a widow

6. Furthermore, since she would not become a widow, she would not marry Hadhrat Ahmad(as). She could only marry him if she had become a widow

7. Those people who are referred in the \Qur’an in Chapter 7 as “Yalhath” are accustomed to raise allegations and they will do so as per their habit. As the revelation said: “And dogs shall remain behind barking”

The prophecy was based on these 7 points and all seekers of truth can see its fulfillment. History testifies that this was fulfilled word for word.

1. On 7 April 1892, Mirza Ahmad Baig married his daughter Muhammadi Begum to Mirza Sultan Muhammad

2. Mirza Ahmad Baig, the father of Muhammadi Begum, did not benefit from the condition of repentance which was present in the prophecy. He died on 30 September 1892, exactly 5 months and 24 days after the marriage of Muhammadi Begum to Mirza Sultan Muhammad. He therefore fulfilled the word “Yamutu” that one man shall die

3. Mirza Sultan Ahmad decided to repent and benefited from the condition of repentance and further fulfilled the prophecy of “Yamutu” that only one man would die, rather than both

4. Since Sultan Muhammad repented, and as such did not die, Muhammadi Begum also did not become a widow

5. Since Muhammadi Begum did not become a widow, she did not marry Hadhrat Ahmad(as). (Anjam-e-Atham, Page 216)

These reasons show why Muhammadi Begum did not marry Hadhrat Ahmad(as). Firstly, the condition of repentance was present in the prophecy. Secondly, Mirza Sultan Muhammad, the husband of Muhammadi Begum repented and therefore, since she did not become a widow, she did not marry Hadhrat Ahmad(as). When the condition of her becoming a widow was not fulfilled, so the natural outcome of that condition ceases to exist. After all of the context is focussed on, no one should doubt the truth of the prophecy if they fear Allah. It is proven that Muhamadi Begum would only marry Hadhrat Ahmad(as) if Mirza Sultan Muhammad did not repent and died within three years. It is also proven that he did repent and therefore did not die in the time of three years.

It is clearly proven that the prophecy allowed repentance. For example, the revelation of “O Lady! Repent! Repent! Affliction has befallen your children”

Hadhrat Ahmad(as) also stated:

ما کان إلہام فی ہذہِ المقدمۃ إلَّا کان معہ شرط

With relation to this prophecy, not a single revelation was received by me which did not stipulate the condition of repentance (Anjam-e-Atham, Page 223)

Hadhrat Ahmad(as) also states:

“There are some foolish people who say that the prophecy with relation to Ahmad Baig’s son in law was not fulfilled; and they fail to understand that this prophecy was conditional’ and in it, th revelation of Allah the Exalted addressed the lady’s grandmother saying:

تھی توبی توبی فانّ البلاء علٰی عقبک

Meaning, O Lady! Repent! Repent! For misfortunate has befallen upon the daughter of your daughter”

Repentance of Mirza Sultan Muhammad

Firstly, common sense shows that Mirza Sultan Muhammad repented. He was full of fear after the death of his father in law, and therefore turned to Allah. He realized the prophecy was indeed true and realized that if he did not repent, he would also die. Hadhrat Ahmad(as) stated:

“Hence, a wise one can acknowledge that after the death of Ahmad Baig, whose death was one part of the prophecy, what would have happened to the one attached to the second part? He would have, as it were, died whilst living. As such, we received two letters from his elders which were written by Hakim sahib residing in Lahore, in which he has written the state of his repentance and seeking of forgiveness. After witnessing all these circumstances, we became fully certain that the time period specifying the death of Sultan Muhammad was no longer applicable” (Announcement of 6 September 1894)

He also stated:

“And when Ahmad Baig died the back of his widowed wife and remaining relatives was broken as it were. They became focussed on prayer and supplication. As we have heard that the mother of Ahmad Baig’s son in law has still not come to terms with this shock.” (Hujjatullah, Page 11)

The second proof comes from Mirza Sultan Muhammad himself in the following written statement:

“Dear brother,

I received your request. I am grateful that you remembered me. I considered the late respected Mirza Sahib – and I still do – to be a holy man, a servant of Islam, of noble character and devout. I have no enmity whatsoever towards his followers, rather I am sorry that I was not able to partake of his blessings during his lifetime. Sincerely, Mirza Sultan Ahmed from Batala”

Imagine, a person whom a death prophecy is made about, and then he says such words about the one who made the prophecy? This is extremely important to keep in mind. He should have hated Hadhrat Ahmad(as). Hadhrat Ahmad(as) continued to write that he has repented and never once did Muhammad Sultan disagree, rather he called Hadhrat Ahmad(as) a holy man.

Sultan Muhammad also stated:
“My father in law, Mirza Ahmad Baig, died in complete accordance with the prophecy. However, Allah the Exalted is forgiving and merciful. He Listens to His servants and shows mercy”.

“I say with firm faith that this prophecy of marriage did not become a means of doubt for me in any way. Now remains the issue of bai’at. So I say on oath that the faith and belief I have for Mirza sahib (as) perhaps none among you who have performed baiat possess as much”

“The state of my heart can be determined by the fact that at the time of this prophecy , the Aryas (due to Lekhram) and the Christians (due to Atham) wished to hand over 100,000 rupees to me so that I would issue a statement against Mirza Sahib. Had I taken that money I could have become a rich man, but it was that very faith and belief which prohibited me from this act” (Al Fazl, 9/13 June 1921)

The fourth proof of the repentance of Sultan Muhammad is the written statement that his brother published in Al Fazl:

In the name of Allah the Gracious, The Merciful
Respected Brothers

Assalamu Alaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuhu

Before I state my intent, I wish to say that by Allah, I did not enter into the Ahmadiyya Jamaat out of greed or any worldly purpose, or under any sort of pressure, rather, by the Grace of Allah, after a long investigation into the truth, I have accepted that Mirza Sahib was true in all of his claims and he was an appointed by Allah, and he proved so true in his words and actions that no seeker of truth can raise any objection against him. All of his prophecies were fulfilled to the letter. It is another matter that some people, out of prejudice or lack of understanding, present some prophecies in an attempt to deceive the public into believing they were not fulfilled. For example, one such prophecy is concerning Mirza Ahmad Baig. It is often presented, and they demand for proof of its fulfillment even though it was clearly fulfilled. Before mentioning this prophecy, I wish to say that this is a conditional prophecy and Allah makes such prophecies through his prophet for the reformation of those concerned. As such, Allah the Almighty States:

وَمَا نُرْسِلُ بِالْآيَاتِ إِلَّا تَخْوِيفًا

And We send not Signs but to warn (Chapter 17 Verse 60)

Here Allah has stated the principle that such conditional prophecies are made for the reformation of people. When the people, fear Allah and return to righteousness, and the Allah the Almighty averts the pending chastisement, as is evident from the incident of Jonah (as) and the stories of the people of Moses(as). In this case, it is not necessary for a conditional prophecy to be fulfilled word for word. Hence, we see that when the people of Mirza sahib and his relatives were insolent to the extent that they rejected the existence of Allah, they insulted the Holy Prophet(sa) the Holy Quran and they issued an announcement that we should be shown a sign, in response, Allah announced a prophecy. In accordance, to this prophecy my grandfather Mirza Ahmad Baig sahib died and the rest of the family became afraid and turned to reformation, the irrefutable evidence of which is that a majority of them joined the community. As such in line with His attributes of Oft-forgiving and Ever Merciful. He changed wrath into mercy.

I announce once more with strong words that this prophecy of the Promised Messiah(as) was also fulfilled.

I ask those who have not accepted Ahmadiyyat because of this prophecy to accept the Imam of the Age. I swear by God that this is that Promised Messiah(as) about whom the Holy Prophet(sa) prophesied and to reject him is to reject the Prophet (saw). The Promised Messiah(as) truly stated:

Come to me with truth, for in this lies all good
There are wild beasts everywhere, and it is I who is the fortress of safety
This cold breeze has come after an age
God knows when these days come again

The fifth proof is the challenge of the repentance of Mirza Sultan Muhammad sahib, presented by Hadhrat Ahmad(as) to opposing clerics. He wrote:

“The judgement is quite easy. Ask Sultan Muhammad, the son in law of Ahmad Baig to publish an announcement of denial. Thereafter, if he should not die within a period that God Almighty might specify, then I am a liar”

“And it is necessary that such a death be withheld from him until he becomes defiant. Thus if you are in a hurry, then come forth and make him defiant and have him announce his denial and then witness the spectacle of God”

This announcement was published over fifty years ago, and Hadhrat Ahmad(as) lived for twelve years after this. However, no opposing scholar was able to present such a announcement. It is clear from these five proofs that Mirza Sultan Muhammad repented and thus did not pass away within three years. Muhammadi Begum did not become a widow and this is why the marriage did not take place.

The result of all of this was that the objectors mocked the prophecy which was fulfilled in its glory. Hadhrat Ahmad(as) emphasized in Izala Auham, that Muhammadi Begum would be married to him. However, the question is when would the marriage take place? It is obvious that she would be widowed after the death of the Promised Messiah(as), When would Sultan Muhammad repent? We accept all of the extract from the writings of the Promised Messiah(as) presented by opposing scholars. However, the matter is that if Sultan Muhammad did not repent after this prophecy and still stayed alive and the marriage did not take place, then this prophecy could be objectionable. However, the marriage was conditional to the repentance of Sultan Muhammad. Therefore, all writings concerning marriage are conditional.

Why Did He not Do Baiat?
Some ask why Sultan Muhammad did not perform baiat. The prophecy was fulfilled from 1886 to 1888, and the condition of repentance was set out in the announcement issued on February 1886 and the 15th of July and in those days Hadhrat Ahmad(as) had not even claimed to be a prophet nor the Mahdi nor would he take the baiat. The condition of repentance did not mean baiat. He repented completely and accepted the Messiah(as).

Unchangeable Decree

Hadhrat Ahmad(as) wrote in Anjam-e-Atham that the marriage is Taqdir-e-Mubram, meaning an unchangeable decree. However, it is evident from the writings of Hadhrat Ahmad(as) that a divine decree in unchangeable depending on the circumstances and conditions and its only after the fulfillment of these conditions as stipulated by Allah that the decree is applied. Thus Hadhrat Ahmad(as) said about Atham:

“Now if Atham swears an oath then this promise is absolute and certain, which does not depend on condition and it is taqdeer-e-mubram (unchangeable decree)”

The death of Atham would only be an unchangeable decree if he would swear on oath. There are numerous ahadith that show that even taqdir-e-mubram can be averted:

ہے اَکْثَرُ مِنَ الدُّعَآءِ فَاِنَّ الدُّعَآءَ یَرُدُّ الْقَضَاءَ الْمُبْرَمَ
“Pray abundantly, for verily, prayer averts unchangeable decree” (Kanzul Ummal)

It is narrated that the Holy Prophet(sa) said: Verily, charity averts an unchangeable decree”

“Prayer is a fierce army from among the armies of Allah. It averts divine decree after it has become unchangeable” (Firdausal Akhbar Dailmi and Jamius Saghir Imam Suyuti Volume 2, Page 17)

This topic is also discussed in Ruhul Bayan. Hadhrat Ahmad(as) was of the belief that an unchangeable decree can be averted with prayer and sadaqa and wherever he has written this unchangeable decree cannot be changed only means that it cannot be changed without repentance and prayer as Allah States:

إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَغْفِرُ أَنْ يُشْرَكَ بِهِ وَيَغْفِرُ مَا دُونَ ذَٰلِكَ لِمَنْ يَشَاءُ ۚ وَمَنْ يُشْرِكْ بِاللَّهِ فَقَدِ افْتَرَىٰ إِثْمًا عَظِيمًا {49}
Surely, Allah will not forgive that any partner be associated with Him; but He will forgive whatever is short of that to whomsoever He pleases. And whoso associates partners with Allah has indeed devised a very great sin (Chapter 4 Verse 49)

Allah also States:
قُلْ يَا عِبَادِيَ الَّذِينَ أَسْرَفُوا عَلَىٰ أَنْفُسِهِمْ لَا تَقْنَطُوا مِنْ رَحْمَةِ اللَّهِ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ جَمِيعًا ۚ إِنَّهُ هُوَ الْغَفُورُ الرَّحِيمُ {54}
Say O My servants who have committed excesses against their own souls! Despair not of the mercy of Allah. Surely Allah Forgives all sins. Verily He is mot Forgiving , Merciful (Chapter 39 verse 54)

The verse states that all sins would be forgiven. Therefore, it all depends on repentance. Hadhrat Ahmad(as) has mentioned that an unchangeable divine decree is in the context of lack of prayers and repentance, not unconditionally as explained in Haqiqatul Wahi:

“When I prayed for the recovery of Abdur Rahman Nawwab Muhammad Ali Khan sahib, it became known that the divine decree is unchangeable. However, when I prayed with greater anguish and supplication. Allah averted this decree and Abdur Rahman became well. Thus, it became clear that according to the Promised Messiah(as) that unchangeable divine decree can be averted with prayer and attention” (Haqiqatul Wahi Page 219)

The Letter of Maulwi Sanaullah
16 years after Hadhrat Ahmad(as) had passed away, Maulwi Sanaullah published an unauthentic extract attributed to Mirza Sultan Ahmad in the newspaper Ahl-e-hadith 1924 March. We demanded that the original should be published so that it becomes clear to the public so that the reality is made evident. However, Maulvi sahib was unable to fulfill our demand until his death. Furthermore, if such statements exist, then it is invalid as the Promised Messiah(as) said: “Thereafter, if he should not die within a period that God Almighty might specify, then I am a liar” meaning that it had to be published in the life of Hadhrat Ahmad(as).

The Statement of Hadhrat Ahmad(as) in the Case of the Wall

Some non Ahmadi Maulvis present the statement of Hadhrat Ahmad(as) from Gurdaspur about the wall making it seem like Hadhrat Ahmad(as) stated:
“She will be married to me” “Not only am I sure, I am certain”

This is completely out of context. In reality, Hadhrat Ahmad(as) stated:

“I will most definitely marry her as the prophecy states: she was married to Sultan Muhammad as per the prophecy… A time will come when a strange effect will overcome them. It is evident from the words of the prophecy that she would be married to someone else. The prophecy concerning her father and husband dying was conditional, the condition being repentance and returning to Allah. The father of the girl did not lie, this is why he died within a couple months of the marriage; the second part of the prophecy was fulfilled. This frightened the family, especially the husband, who was a part of the prophecy and he repented. As such, we received letters from relatives and closed friends. The girl is still alive”(Al Hakm, 10 August 1901, Page 14, 15, Volume 2)

Was the Marriage Dissolved or Delayed?
Hadhrat Ahmad(as) said in Haqiqatul Wahi:
“The marriage was dissolved or delayed”

This sentence means that if Sultan Muhammad stays true to his repentance and does not issue an announcement of denial, he would not pass away during the time of Hadhrat Ahmad(as) and Hadhrat Ahmad(as) would not be married to Muhammadi Begum. This is what dissolved means. However, if he issues a denial, he would die in the appointed time. Thus, the nikah would seem to be delayed.

As for the words “we joined her in marriage to you” the same words are used in Surah al Ahzab. This means we married her to you after she became the widow and if she became the widow of Sultan Muhammad. Hadhrat Ahmad(as) translated it as:
“After her return, we have joined her in marriage to you”

Hadhrat Ahmad(as) himself explained this revelation. He wrote:

“And as for the issue that the revelation states that the marriage of Nikah of this woman has been announced with me in the heavens, this is true, but as we have already mentioned, for the apparent manifestation of this nikah which was announced in the heavens, there was a condition given by Allah, which was published at that time too and is:

اَیَّتُھَاالْمَرْأَۃُ تُوْبِیْ تُوْبِیْ فَاِنَّ الْبَلَاءَ عَلٰی عَقِبِکِ
“O Lady! Repent! Repent! For affliction shall befall your children”

It is narrated in Jalalain:

“The Holy Prophet(saw) wished to join Zainab in marriage to Zaid. She disliked it at first, and then she accepted. Thus, they married. Thereafter, Allah informed the Holy Prophet(sa) that Zainab is from among your wives. The Holy Prophet(saw) was reluctant to tell instruct Zaid to divorce Zainab. During this period, Zainab and Zaid had relations as husband and wife. The Holy Prophet(saw) instructed Zaid to keep his wife, and he feared that would raise allegations against him.
So what did this prophecy lead to?

The following members joined Ahmadiyyat:

1. The wife of Mirza Ahmad Baig (mother of Muhammadi Begum), who was also a Moosi
2. The sister of Muhammadi Begum also joined
3. Mirza Muhammad Ahsan Baig
4. Inayat Begum, Sister of Muhammadi Begum
5. Mirza Ahmad Baig sahib
6. Mirza Mahmood Ahmad Baig, grandson of Mirza Ahmad Baig
7. The daughter of Mirza Nizamuddin and all of their family members are Ahmadi
8. Mirza Gul Muhammad, son of Mirza Nizam-uddin Sahib
9. The wife of Mirza Ghulam Qadir sahib
10. Mahmoodah Begum, sister of Muhammadi Begum
11. Mirza Muhammad Ishaaq Baig sahib, son of Mirza Sultan Muhammad sahib

If this prophecy really failed, it is obvious that these members would not have joined the true Islam.

Many misunderstand the purpose behind this prophecy and claim that it was made out of some sort of personal desire. This is totally false. The prophecy was a sign for the disbelievers since they were in a horrible state. Even the opponents of the true Islam like Muhammad Yaqub has said this in his book Laa Thani

The clerics sadly see the clear facts but still argue that the prophecy was made out of desire. These people mock other prophets in the same way. For example they believe:

عَلَیْکَ زَوْجَکَ زَیْنَبَ وَذٰلِکَ اَنَّہٗ رَاٰھَا بَعْدَ مَا اَنْکَحَھَا زَیْدًا فَوَقَعَ فِیْ نَفْسِہٖ وَقَالَ سُبْحٰنَ اللّٰہِ مُقَلِّبَ الْقُلُوْبِ

“The explanation of the verse “Keep your wife Zainab is that he saw her after he had joined her to Zaid in marriage, and fell in love with her, and he said Holy is Allah who turns hearts” (Tafsir Baidawi)

Regarding Hadhrat Yusuf(as), they state:

وَلَقَدْ ھَمَّتْ بِہٖ قَصَدَتْ مُخَالِطَتَہٗ وَھَمَّ مَخَالِطَتَھَا لِمَیْلِ الشَّھَوٰتِ الْغَیْرِ الْاِخْتِیَارِی۔

“The meaning of Hamat Bihi is that she desired to commit adultery with him, and he also desired to commit adultery with her due to natural carnal desires” (Jalalain)

In regards to Hadhrat Daud(as) they say:

طَلَبَ امْرَءَ ۃَ شَخْصٍ لَیْسَ لَہٗ غَیْرُھَا وَتَزَوَّجَھَا وَدَخَلَ بِھَا

He proposed to the wife of a person and married her (Jalalain)

For this reason, I am not surprised about their behaviour with Hadhrat Ahmad(as) and his fulfilled prophecy. In Jalalain, it is also written that Sulaiman(as) fell for a woman and married her.

Hadhrat Ahmad(as) wrote to Ahmad Baig and his family and said that if you do not give the girl to me in marriage, than I will make my son Fazal Ahmed divorce your daughter. There is no room for objections here because Islam allows the father to order his son to divorce his wife, whether the son agrees or not. It is mentioned in a hadith:

Hadhrat Abdullah bin Umar(ra) states that I had a wife who I loved. However, my father hated her. So he commanded me to divorce her, but I refused. I mentioned this to the Prophet Muhammad (saw) and he stated: Oh Abdullah bin Umar, divorce your wife. (Tirmidhi)

It is also said in a hadith:

اَلطَّلَاقُ لِرَضَاءِ الْوَالِدَیْنِ فَھُوَ جَائِز
It is permissible to divorce for the pleasure of one’s parents (Mishkat)

Bukhari also mentions that Ibrahim(as) left Ismail(as) in Mecca and that Ibrahim(as) also ordered his son to divorce. Hadhrat Ahmad(as) only did as the past prophets by instructing his son to cut off relations with those who were enemies of the Prophet (saw) and were atheists.

Hadhrat Ahmad(as) received the following revelation in this regard:

الَّذِیْنَ آمَنُوْا وَ عَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ وَ قَطَعُوْا تَعَلُّقَھُمْ مِنْھُمْ وَ بَعُدُوْا مِنْ مَجَالِسِھِمْ فَاُولٰئِکَ مِنَ الْمَرْحُوْمِیْنَ

“Except those who believed and did good works and cut off their ties with them and shunned their meetings. It is they who will be shown the mercy

Why was There an Attempt?

The anti Ahmadis ask why there was an attempt to fulfill the prophecy. The truth of the matter is that Whenever Allah makes a promise to the people, He only helps them when they make their best efforts. For example, the Prophet(sa) was promised victory in war. Why did he then not go to the battle unprepared without an army? Allah Promised Yusuf(as) that he will succeed and tell them of this affair of theirs, but despite this he worked extremely hard and asked his fellow prisoner to intercede on his behalf by saying mention me to thy lord. The Holy Prophet(sa) was told the Arabs would become Muslims but this did not stop him from preaching.

Hadhrat Ahmad(as) himself states:

“They also object that why were there attempts made to arrange the marriage with the daughter of Ahmad Baig. They do not understand that the attempt was made with the purpose of stopping this decree, so that the punishment is averted. Such an attempt was also made with Abdullah Atham and Lekhram. From where did they learn that it is forbidden to make a permissible attempt to fulfill a prophecy? Ponder with modesty and deliberation that was the Holy Prophet(sa) not promised in the Holy Qur’an that the idol worship would be wiped out? And Islam would be established in place of idol worship and the day would come when the keys of the Kabah would be in the hands of the Prophet(saw) and Allah would perform this himself? However despite this, such efforts were made for the propagation of Islam, the details of which do not need to be mentioned” (Zamima Barahin-e-Ahmadiyya)

Unmarried or as a Widow
Hadhrat Ahmad(as) wrote that this revelation relates to the marriage of Hadhrat Ummul Mumineen (ra) (Nuzul-al-Masih, Page 146). This meant that she would be tied in matrimony to the Promised Messiah(as) but then would become a widow. This is what happened. It had been stated that she would stay alive after his (as) demise. As the prophecy of Muhammadi Begum was related to a lack of repentance, and the subsequent demise of Sultan Mohammad, this revelation fulfilled in the manner mentioned above.

In Ruhul Mani, it is written regarding such conditional promises:

“It is possible for Allah to go against a promise of divine punishment even though not fulfilling a promise is forbidden, as has been mentioned in the traditions. As such, Anas narrates that the Holy Prophet(saw) said: If Allah promises someone a reward then he definitely fulfills it. However, if he promises a punishment then he has a choice; to punish or not to punish. A prayer of the true A’imah (the leaders) is “Oh Allah, who when he makes a promise fulfills and when he warns forgives”

Imam Allamah Fakhruddin Razi(ra) stated:

“In my view, all admonitory prophecies contain a prophecy, if Allah does not forgive then they would be fulfilled. If the prophecy is not fulfilled, then this does not prove the words of Allah to be false” (Tafsir al-Kabeer)

It is written in Tafsir Baidawi:

بِاَنَّ وَعِیْدَ الْفُسَّاقِ مَشْرُوْطٌ بِعَدَمِ الْعَفْوِ

“The punishment of the transgressors is dependent on the lack of forgiveness”

The family of Muhammadi Begum began to turn to Islam for solace and its members sought forgiveness for their misdeeds. They even asked Hadhrat Ahmad(as) to intercede on their behalf that Allah the Almighty Forgives them and saves them from any torment. Even an enemy of Ahmadiyyat, Maulvi Sanaullah Amritsari was forced to admit this as he quoted the passage which mentions the letters of repentance the family of Muhammadi Baig’s family sent. (Ilahamat Mirza pg 69)

Some raise the allegation that Hadrat Ahmad (as) said that he would have blessed children from the marriage of Muhammadi Begum. He (as) corrected his own interpretation in Haqiqatul Wahi in which he says this prophecy is regarding the Promised son who he has said is Hadrat Musleh Maud (ra):

The prophecy that the Promised Messiah will be blessed with progeny indicates that God will create from his progeny a man who will succeed him and will defend Islam, as this news has already been given in some of my prophecies” (Haqiqatul Wahi, Ruhani Khazain, Volume 22, Pages 320-326)

Final statements of Hadrat Ahmad (as) on this issue:

“… The fear of Ahmad Baig’s death overcame them, which resulted in him nullifying one part of the prophecy.” (Badr, 23 April 1908, p.4)

Some critic had sent a letter to Hazrat Maulana Maulawi Sayyed Muhammad Ahsan in which he had criticized the prophecy concerning Mirza Ahmad Baig. Maulawi Sahib mentioned it at the time of the walk.

The Promised Messiah (as) said:

One should first ask such a person whether he even subscribes to the Kalimah [Islamic creed]
or not, and whether he even believes in the Holy Prophet (sa) and the Prophets before him or
not?

I am baffled at the condition and mindset of such people that they witness thousands of Signs. They neither care for them nor benefit from them, yet they are eager to raise an objection
when they fail to comprehend out of their weak understanding and wisdom, the true import of a matter that is susceptible to interpretation. If they are asked what use they have made of thousands of clear Signs that are on record, they have no answer. The issue they criticize due to their lack of knowledge is in conformity with the practice of God, and no Prophet has been dealt with differently [by this practice of God].

What peril his faith is in who denies this practice of God! He does not just criticize my prophecy, he falsifies even the Holy Prophet (sa). In fact, this necessarily implies rejection of all
Prophets.

Consider the incident of the Treaty of Hudaibiyyah of the Holy Prophet (sa)’s in which many of the senior Companions (ra) faltered. However, God saved them by lending them a helping hand. Even Hazrat Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, was involved in it. Another incident was when the Holy Prophet (sa)’s said that Abu Jahl would accept Islam. Besides these, there is the matter of twelve thrones for the twelve disciples of Jesus (sa); the matter of the tribe of Prophet Jonahas. A similar incident is also found in the life of Moses (sa). I wonder what other things
such a person would dispute even though he is called a Muslim.

It is absurd to reject something simply because you fail to comprehend it.

One leg of this prophecy of mine was broken in accordance with the prophecy, right away. This caused fear to descend upon them. They repented by giving alms and charity, by showing their submission and humility in so many other ways, and by shedding tears and crying. Thereupon, God Almighty also turned to them in accordance with His practice.

Look, there was no precondition in the promise of destruction that was given by Prophet Jonah to his people and the wording was clear and explicit that (after forty days), destruction would descend upon them. Thus, when the suspension of an unconditional and definitive prophecy with repentance, anguish, shedding of tears, and wailing is in conformity with the practice of God, then why is a conditional prophecy criticized? It had the following clear words:

[‘Repent, repent, for mischief is pursuing you!’]

Hazrat Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jilani, may Allah be pleased with him, writes in his book, Futuhul-Ghaib —meaning that there are some promises of God Almighty that are not fulfilled. The Holy Quran also mentions of mutashabihat [verses susceptible to differing interpretations]. Such mutashabihat help distinguish a believer from a disbeliever. They are an instrument to set apart the concealed apostates and hypocrites. The world would not have been the same if there were no mutashabihat. It is the way of a hypocrite that he fails to see the river flowing and fails to draw any benefit from it. Instead, he is drawn towards the dried sticks and straws, and [consequently] becomes an apostate.

They would have had an occasion to criticize if I had presented something outside the things common to previous Prophets, and had presented something new on my own accord. It is mentioned in the Holy Quran that:

If we had but listened or possessed sense, we should not have been among the inmates of the blazing Fire (Surah al-Mulk, 67:11).

In this era, God has amassed such a rich treasure of mighty Signs, and has furnished such means that even a 100,000 Prophets could prove their prophethood if they wished to do so. In earlier times, there were neither such pressing needs nor such means and resources. If powerful Signs and manifest miracles are shown right with the advent of a Prophet, faith would no longer remain faith—it would merely be an acknowledgement of a manifest reality. There would remain no basis for reward and higher ranks. If clear successes and victories are achieved right at the outset, the corrupt, the wicked, and the sinful would have been the first to join the Prophets (as). There would remain no way to distinguish between the truthful and the imposter, or between the sincere and the hypocrite. In that case, there would be—God forbid—no assurance

Look, Hazrat Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, recognised the Holy Prophet, may peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, due to his sound judgement and light of faith. Did he ask for a Sign? Of course not! He accepted the truth of the claim of the Holy Prophet (sa) with great conviction and steadfastness simply on the basis of the initial events of the life
of the Holy Prophets (as). (Malfuzat vol. 10, p. 281-285)

Despite the fact that Maulvi Muhammad Hussain Batalvi hated the true Islam, he was forced to admit that this prophecy was fulfilled, although he had an excuse. He stated:

“Though the prophecy was fulfilled, yet it was due to astrology” (Ishaatush Sunnah Volume V)

Hadhrat Ahmad(as) stated:

“How much signs have been manifested for the support of my claim. All those claims that such and such prophecy was not fulfilled are absolute falsehood. Indeed, all of my prophecies were fulfilled, and no objection can be raised against one of my prophecies which the ignorant and faithless people have not raised against the prophecies of the Prophets before me” (Dhamimah Barahine Ahmadiyya Part 5, Page 129)

“O foolish one! First you should raise the curtain of prejudice from your eyes, then you will realize that all prophecies were fulfilled. The succour of Allah is striking the opponents, however, it is strange that they do not feel anything. The earth has shown signs and so have the heavens, signs have been shown for friends and also for enemies. However, no sign was shown for the blind. But Allah will not leave this work incomplete, until he separates the wicked and good” (Dhamimah Barahine Ahmadiyya Part 5)

“They also raise the objection that this prophecy was not fulfilled. In reply to this, it is enough to write “May the curse of Allah be upon the liars”. If they ponder over my books, or ask those of knowledge and understanding from among my people, they would realize that thousands of prophecies have been fulfilled until now, and the witnesses of their fulfillment are not just a couple, rather, thousands are witnesses” ((Dhamimah Barahine Ahmadiyya Part 5 pg 197)

“They object on a couple of other prophecies that they were not fulfilled. However, this is falsehood on their part. In fact there is none of my prophecies that has remained unfulfilled. If anyone harbours any such doubt in his mind, let him come to me with honest intention, and let him present his objection face to face. If he does not receive a wholly satisfying answer, I will be liable to pay him any companion” (Haqiqatul Mahdi, Page 7)
