Mockery of Imam Hussain رضي الله عنه‎ ?

The anti Ahmadi Muslims raise the allegation that Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmadas mocked Imam Hussainra. This is totally false and has no basis to it, rather it is a clear misinterpretation of the sayings of the Messiah. Hadhrat Ahmad (as) was a lover of the Ahlul Baiat and defended them his entire life.

Hadhrat Ahmad (as) stated:

Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmadas rested on a charpoy as his children played in the garden, still unaware of the grand status of their beloved father. It was the first third of Muharram and the Promised Messiahas called upon his children – Hazrat Nawab Mubaraka Begumra and Hazrat Mirza Mubarak Ahmadra – and narrated the story of Hazrat Imam Husainra. As he began narrating the story, deep emotions set in. With tears flowing from his blessed eyes, he recounted how the grandchild of his beloved Master, Hazrat Muhammad Mustafasa was martyred in the plains of Karbala; how the ahl-e-bait – members of the house of the Holy Prophetsa –  were deprived of food and water before the massacre took place of 10 Muharram (Tahrirat-e-Mubaraka, p. 22). The anguish was visible from his face as he ended the story and expressed, “Yazid the wicked carried out this injustice on the grandchild of the Holy Prophetsa but God rapidly brought His wrath upon them.” (Sirat-e-Tayyiba, Love for the Holy Prophetsa, narration no. 9, pp. 31-32)

In 1875, Hadhrat Ahmad (as) had a powerful vision. He (as) stated:

“At this point I recall a very clear vision which was as follows:31 After Maghrib prayer, while I was fully awake, I was overtaken by a slight numbing of my faculties…and had a wonderful experience. First there was a sound of some people walking fast…and then five very dignified, holy, and handsome personages came into my vision. They were the Holy Prophet, may peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, Hadrat ‘Ali, Hasan, Husain and Fatimah azZahra’, may Allah be pleased with all of them. One of them, and I think it was Hadrat Fatimah, may Allah be pleased with her, out of great affection and kindness like a loving mother, placed this humble one’s head upon her thigh. Then I was given a book concerning which I was told: ‘It is a commentary on the Holy Qur’an, which has been compiled by ‘Ali and now ‘Ali bestows it upon you.’” (Barahine Ahmadiyya Part 4, Page 503, Sub Footnote, Ruhani Khazain Volume 1, Pages 598-599, sub footnote, also in Tohfa-e-Golarviyyah, Page 31, sub footnote 3)

The first quotation which the non Ahmadi Muslims accuse is as follows:

“O Shia nation, do not insist that Hussain is your saviour, because I say truthfully that today there is one among you who is greater than that Hussain” (Dafiul Bala)

There is no room for an allegation here. The Promised Messiah(as) was a Prophet of Allah and the Prophets are greater in rank. Even the Sunni Muslims accept that the latter day Messiah would be greater. They also accept the Khulafa of the Prophet (sa) were greater than Imam Hussain(ra). This is not called mockery. Ahmadas is simply showing the Shias that the rank they have given to Imam Hussainra to what they have is completely wrong and the Messiah is in front of them who they should accept.

Secondly, the writing has been taken out of context. Here Hadhur (as) is speaking of the plague and referring to those Shias who denied the Messiah(as). In the start of the book, he (as) is speaking of the sign of the Plague. He (as) challenged all opponents to make an oath that their area would be free from the plague. He (as) said anyone who makes this oath will be destroyed and so will their town because they rejected the one sent by Allah. This is exactly what happened. Then he (as) said what about those sects who say Hussain(ra) is the judge and ask him for help. Meaning, Shias who make their imams as if they are God. He (as) then said his Shia teacher would say love the Imams and hate the sahaba. He (as) said when the plague started the Shias said the same. Then In this context, he (as) says that those who say Imam Hussain (ra) will remove them from this punishment should leave this thought because he (as) is among them and is greater and they should accept him to be saved. This is exactly what happened. The Shias were afflicted by the plague and Qadian was safeguarded. The subject of matter here is the plague.

The Shias continued to pass away. Then Hadhur (as) said “But when the same disease broke among the Shiites, their slogans calling upon the Imam Hussain abated” (Defense Against the Plague and A Criterion for the Elect of God, Page 9)

There is nothing wrong with the Messiah claiming to be better than Imam Hussainra. This status was given to him by Allah and by the Holy Prophet Muhammadsaw. A hadith states:

“Abu Bakrra is the most superior from among the Ummah, except that a prophet is raised.”(Kanzul Ummal)

If this was disrespect, then God Forbid the Prophet (sa) disrespected all of mankind because he (as) claimed to be the greatest. There is no disrespect in this. Only a ignorant Muslim can raise such an allegation.

Hadhrat Ibn Sirin (rh) also said that the latter day Messiah would be greater than even the Khulafa.

This hadith itself shows that the Messiah would be greater than Imam Hussainra and also the khulafa-e-rashideen because of his title of a Prophet. The accusation of the anti Ahmadis is on the Prophet Muhammadsaw who gave the messiah this rank as well. Furthermore, the Holy Prophet Muhammadsawwas told by Allah that he is the seal of the Prophets. He also himself stated:

Narrated Abu Sa’eed:that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “I am the master of the children of Adam on the Day of Judgement, and I am not boasting. The Banner of Praise will be in my hand, and I am not boasting. There will not be a Prophet on that day, not Adam nor anyone other than him, except that he will be under my banner. And I am the first one for whom the earth will be opened for, and I am not bragging.”(Jami’at Tirmidhi, Volume 1, Book 46, Hadith #3615)

Will the anti Ahmadis claim that the Holy Prophet Muhammadsaw now accused all of the Prophets and mocked them God forbid?

The next quote which they bring an allegation against is :

“But, so far as Husain is concerned, recall what happened in the desert of Karbala; You still cry over it. You ought to reflect” (Miracle of Ahmad, Page 130)

This is also out of context. In the same book Hadhur (as) states:

“What I have written in the qasidah about Imam Husain, may Allah be pleased with him, or about Hadrat ‘Isa [ Jesus], peace be upon him, is not based on human understanding. Evil indeed is he who speaks foul of God’s perfect and righteous servants based on his own selfish notions. I believe firmly that no one can survive even for a night after having spoken impertinently about such righteous people like Husain and Hadrat ‘Isa. Instead, according to the wa‘id He who is at enmity with a friend of Mine ] such a person is quickly seized” (Miracle of Ahmad, Page 66)

Now this couplet is out of context. Hadhur (as) here is challenging a Shia scholar named Ali Hairi. He gave Imam Hussain (ra) some sort of divinity. These couplets are responding to him. These words are not about the real Imam Hussain (ra).  Hadhur (as) is in specific saying “your Hussain” meaning your false conception of Imam Hussain (ra).

This person believed Imam Hussain (ra) was above even all the Prophets. He (as) was speaking to Ali Hairi and such Shias who exaggerated the status of Imam Hussain (ra) and these people would say he (ra) would even intercede for our beloved Prophet Muhammad (sa)! He (as) then said they did to Hussain (ra) what Christians to do Isa(as). These words are for such Shias who have made him into some sort of God.

It’s the Shias who have made Ali (ra) and Hussain (ra) some sort of God. They are known as Gali and Nusairiya Shias.

On the same page, he (as) is explaining that these Shias say Hadhrat Imam Hussain (ra) will intercede for the Prophet (sa). This is responding to the false conception of imam Hussain(ra). In this couplet, he (as) is illustrating the fact that only Allah can help us not Imam Hussain (ra). He (as) explains that you people say Imam Hussain (ra) can protect you from everything but was himself martyred. The Shias would ask Imam Hussain (ra) for help instead of Allah which is why these words were used. In the same book, he (as) said that he is speaking of those who literally worship Imam Hassan (ra) and Hussain (ra). He (as) then says their shirk has spread and is only referring to such Shias.

Hadhrat Mirza Nasir Ahmad (rh) explained this as well and said the Shias being spoken to are only those who believed he was the leader of all and would save even the Prophets. He (as) referred to a wrong group of people who had a false perception of Imam Hussain(ra).

The next couplet they raise allegations on is:

“I was annihilated by [my love for] the Beloved, but your Husain, Was killed by his enemies. The difference is evidently clear and manifest.” (Miracle of Ahmad, Page 154)

As explained earlier, he (as) is speaking of the Shias who made Imam Hussain (ra) a God who controls the universe. He (as) is saying we should be annihilated by the love of God and ask him for help alone.

It is also a fact that the amount of support of Allah which was with Ahmadaswas much greater than many others as he was a prophet of Allah. This strong statement is to raise awareness among the Shia Muslims in regards to their belief which is nearing shirk. They cry till today and harm themselves over the death of Imam Hussainra which is unacceptable. The Shias attribute a status to him that he has not claimed and go beyond limit with non Islamic actions like hurting themselves

The last  saying is:

“It is as if I am walking around Karbala and hundreds of Hussains are hidden in my heart”

In this Hadhur (as) is saying just like Imam Hussain (ra), he is also annihilated with the love of Allah and in this age he is persecuted because of it. Then he (as) said “The qualities of my Beloved that arouse such passions in me are indeed mysterious. Those smitten by these mysteries do not number in the ones or twos or even thousands. In fact, they are countless. In every age, people sacrifice themselves for His sake. His face is adorned with the blood of the martyrs. For in this age, this good fortune was destined for me, I gradually became the one sacrificed”.

He (as) is speaking of the agony and pain Imam Hussain (ra) suffered. He is paying a tribute to Imam Hussain (ra). The words Karbala and Imam Hussain (ra) are used metaphorically. The couplet has nothing to do with superiority. The word gariaban here means the heart, and this is how he (as) translated it in his other couplet “Inside me there is a passion for Allah. I do not know for how long this heart will survive” He (as) said his heart is full of love for those who are devoted to Allah, such as Imam Hussain(ra) who are willing to sacrifice themselves thousands of times.

Firstly this is a way of speech. The journey of Ahmadas was not literally in Karbala nor were there literally Imam Hussain’s in his heart. Rather this shows that his own problems are greater than the problems Imam Hussainrawent through. Every day for Ahmadas was Karbala as his master Muhammadsawwas mocked every single day and so was Islam. He himself was persecuted as well and received a large amount of death threats. Its really sad that a majority of Shia Muslims have rejected this great Imam. We see similar poetry by the non Ahmadi Muslims. It is stated:

Imam Naui said “I am the Karbala of Love from head to toe I am thirsty for the water of love and in the desert of my heart thousands of Hussains are being slaughtered”

The last couplet they raise allegations on is:

“You have forgotten the honour and glory of Almighty God, And recite only the name of Husain. Do you think you can deny this? Hence, this has become a calamity for Islam; Alas! Alongside a pile of musk is lying a heap of stools.” (Miracle of Ahmad, Page 156)

This is also out of context. Here Hadhrat Ahmad (as) is saying that some Shias only call upon Hussain and forgot Allah. The words a pile of musk is lying a heap of stools are not for Imam Hussain (ra). This is a lie. He (as) is referring to the shirk of Shias not Imam Hussain(ra). He says “If the faith were to warrant idolatry”.

Hadhrat Ahmad (as) was a lover of Imam Hussain (ra) and hated Yazid. He called Yazid an impure worm of the earth who was blinded by the world. He called Imam Hussain (ra) truthful, pious, and a model for the future Muslims to follow. Once in the house of Hadhrat Ahmad (as) the incident of Imam Hussain (ra) martyrdom was being mentioned, and he began to tear up and said “Yazid performed this cruel act against the grandson of the Prophet (sa) but God also brought his wrath down upon the oppressors.

He (as) then said “Without a doubt he (Imam Hussain) is from the chieftains of paradise and harboring an ioat’s worth of rancor against him is a means of being deprived of faith. And this Imam’s righteousness, love for God, patience, steadfastness, devotion and worship is a perfect example for us” (Majmua-e-Ishteharat, Volume 3, page 545)

He(as) also states: Hadhrat Imam Hussain (ra) was a pious, God fearing person who could not bring himself to accept the morally corrupt Yazid as a leader of the Muslims” (Majmua-e-Ishtiharat, Volume 3, Page 844)

Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmadas states:

I am ready to offer my heart and soul for the beauty of Muhammadsaw My body is merely the dust of the lane treaded by the progeny ofMuhammadsaw . I have seen with my heart’s eye and heard with perceptive ears, That the trumpet of the beauty of Muhammadsaw , echoes everywhere. This ever-flowing spring of divine verities which I am distributing freely among God’s creatures, Is but a drop from the ocean of the excellences of Muhammadsaw  .(Majmua-e-Istiharat vol 1. Page 97)
