Lanat 1000 Times?

One of the allegations raised by the anti-Ahmadis is that Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (as) has used the word لَعْنَه in his books and on one instance, he wrote it 1000 times and that this does not suit the character of a Prophet of God. They deceive the public and try to say that a Prophet never prays against his people. This is completely against the Qur’an and ahadith. They also try to say that لَعْنَه is a bad word, which is also a false allegation.

Linguistic Meaning of لَعْنَه (Curse)

Firstly, the word “lanat” is not a swear word. It refers to losing the Blessings of God and is invoked by every Prophet in response to the hostility of the opponents. If this prayer is not made, then the innocent public have a chance of also being deceived by the opposition. The question is, should the Prophets of Allah send blessings upon the opponents or the prayer of لَعْنَه? “Lanat” is not a curse word, rather a prayer. When Allah Sends His curse on a person, it means Allah Removed them from His Nearness and Love. When Prophets and angels send the curse of Allah, it is a prayer because they cannot remove anyone from the Nearness of Allah. It is a prayer to distinguish truth from falsehood.

Hazrat Imam Raghib (rh) stated:

‘To curse means he made him far from himself or made him far from good.’(Mufradaat, pg. 422, Majmaul Bahrain, vol. 1-2, pg. 404)

Ibn Manzur wrote :

Cursing means to be expelled and removed from goodness. It is said it is a condemnation and supplication for expulsion and removal from Allah and from the creation. (Lisan Al-Arab)

The commentaries of the Holy Qur’an say the same.

Ibn Kathir, one of the most famous exegetes in his commentary of Chapter 2 Verse 60 defines the curse of Allah as:

أَبْعَدَهُ مِنْ رَحْمَتِهِ

(those who incurred the curse of Allah) were expelled from His mercy,

We see the same definition in the widely accepted commentaries of the Qur’an in the Muslim world today.

Usage of لَعْنَةَ in the Holy Qur’an

When we turn to the Holy Qur’an and ahadith, we see that cursing people who are the opponents of the truth and reject the clear message of the Prophets are not only cursed by the Prophets of Allah, but also by the angels and the believers altogether.

Allah the Almighty States:

كَيْفَ يَهْدِي اللَّهُ قَوْمًا كَفَرُوا بَعْدَ إِيمَانِهِمْ وَشَهِدُوا أَنَّ الرَّسُولَ حَقٌّ وَجَاءَهُمُ الْبَيِّنَاتُ ۚ وَاللَّهُ لَا يَهْدِي الْقَوْمَ الظَّالِمِينَ {87} أُولَٰئِكَ جَزَاؤُهُمْ أَنَّ عَلَيْهِمْ لَعْنَةَ اللَّهِ وَالْمَلَائِكَةِ وَالنَّاسِ أَجْمَعِينَ {88}

How shall Allah guide a people who have disbelieved after believing and who had borne witness that the Messenger was true and to whom clear proofs had come? And Allah guides not the wrongdoing people. Of such the reward is that on them shall be the curse of Allah and of angels and of men, all together. (Chapter 3 verses 87-88)

In this verse, Allah has Stated that such people are cursed not only by Allah, but the angels and all believers together. Here an infinite amount of curses is mentioned for the wrongdoers.

Allah then States:

فَمَنْ حَاجَّكَ فِيهِ مِنْ بَعْدِ مَا جَاءَكَ مِنَ الْعِلْمِ فَقُلْ تَعَالَوْا نَدْعُ أَبْنَاءَنَا وَأَبْنَاءَكُمْ وَنِسَاءَنَا وَنِسَاءَكُمْ وَأَنْفُسَنَا وَأَنْفُسَكُمْ ثُمَّ نَبْتَهِلْ فَنَجْعَلْ لَعْنَتَ اللَّهِ عَلَى الْكَاذِبِينَ{62}

Now whoso disputes with thee concerning him, after what has come to thee of knowledge, say to him, ‘Come, let us call our sons and your sons, and our women and your women, and our people and your people; then let us pray fervently and invoke the curse of Allah on those who lie.’(Chapter 3 verse 62)

Allah then States that Hazrat Daud (as) and Hazrat Isa (a) cursed the disbelievers:

لُعِنَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا مِنْ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ عَلَىٰ لِسَانِ دَاوُودَ وَعِيسَى ابْنِ مَرْيَمَ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ بِمَا عَصَوْا وَكَانُوا يَعْتَدُونَ {79}

Those amongst the children of Israel who disbelieved were cursed by the tongue of David, and of Jesus, son of Mary. That was because they disobeyed and used to transgress.(Chapter 5, Verse 79)

Usage of لَعْنَةَ in the Prophetic Narrations

The Prophet Muhammad (sa) is the greatest of all Prophets and our role model. He was of the best character, and even he sent the curse of Allah on those who deserved it.

Hazrat Muhammad (sa) stated:

“May the curse of Allah be on the Jews and Christians who build places of worship at the graves of their prophets” (Sahih al-Bukhari, #3453)

The Prophet Muhammad (sa) also spoke of others who are accursed because of their wrongdoings throughout the prophetic narrations. We see the same with the companions of the Prophet Muhammad (sa).

During the life of Hazrat Muhammad (sa), there was a Christian deputation from Najran which consisted of sixty people. They met the Prophet Muhammad (sa) in his mosque and discussed the doctrine of the divinity of Hazrat Isa(as) continued at some length. Once the discussion was over, the Holy Prophet (sa) invited the Christians for a prayer duel, which involves sending the curse of Allah. The verse which has this command is the following:

فَمَنْ حَاجَّكَ فِيهِ مِنْ بَعْدِ مَا جَاءَكَ مِنَ الْعِلْمِ فَقُلْ تَعَالَوْا نَدْعُ أَبْنَاءَنَا وَأَبْنَاءَكُمْ وَنِسَاءَنَا وَنِسَاءَكُمْ وَأَنْفُسَنَا وَأَنْفُسَكُمْ ثُمَّ نَبْتَهِلْ فَنَجْعَلْ لَعْنَتَ اللَّهِ عَلَى الْكَاذِبِينَ{62}

The Christians knew that they would be humiliated and therefore declined to accept the challenge. However, the verse was still revealed and shows us that the Prophets do send the curse of Allah on the opponents who spread falsehood.

Context of the Incident

When someone sees a good deed in a person he hates, he looks at that deed with disgust and considers it an evil deed. We see the same case here. The opponents never share the reason for this curse. They never share why these curses were written. During the time of Hazrat Ahmad (as), hundreds of Muslim scholars left Islam and became Priests. They began to attack Islam day and night and abused the Prophet Muhammad (sa). One famous scholar, Maulvi Imaduddin left Islam and became Padre Imaduddin, meaning the Priest Imaduddin. When he left Islam, he continued to call himself “Maulvi” to deceive others into thinking that he was a knowledgeable Muslim who knew the Arabic language and still left Islam for Christianity. He tried to deceive others and claimed to be fluent in the Arabic language. Padre Imaduddin used a lot of abusive language in his writings against the Prophet Muhammad (sa).

One of his main allegations was that the Qur’an challenges the opponents to provide something like it but is itself full of errors. He would say that it is in no way a literary miracle. Hazrat Ahmad (as) was the star of the Muslims during this time. They all knew that he was the greatest defender for Islam. This included every sect of the Muslims. The Promised Messiah (as) replied to him in Barahin-e-Ahmadiyya. He (as) stated:

“Let Padre Imad-ud-din hold a dialogue with an Arab for one or even half an hour on any religious or secular topic so that the public may know whether he is capable of communicating his thoughts in simple and idiomatic conversation in the manner of a native Arab. I am certain that he cannot do it, and I know with full certainty that if I were to confront him with an Arab to converse with him, he would not be able to relate even one tiny tale in the style and taste of the Arabs, and would remain bogged down in the mud of ignorance. Should there be any doubt, then I put him under oath to give it a try. I, myself, undertake the responsibility that, if Padre Imad-ud-din asks me, I will provide an Arab and arrange for a meeting on an agreed date which will be attended by some qualified Hindus, and also some Muslim divines. It would be incumbent upon Imad-ud-din to bring some Christian brothers with him. Then, in the presence of all attendees, he will first narrate, in Arabic, a story which will be provided to him at that time. Following that, the Arab gentleman, who will also be present, will narrate the same in his own language. If the judges rule that Imad-ud-din’s narration was of high quality, elegant, and in accordance with the literary style of the Arabs, I shall concede that his linguistic criticism is not objectionable and will further award him a cash prize of fifty rupees immediately. On the other hand, if Imad-ud-din makes a reeking display of disheveled and erroneous composition instead of making a fluent and eloquent presentation, or, fearing his humiliation and exposure of his incapability, does not even publicly announce his willingness to go through such a test, then what can I say except, لَعْنَتَ اللَّهِ عَلَى الْكَاذِبِينَ [The curse of Allah be Upon the Liars]” (Barahin-e-Ahmadiyya, Part 4, Page 201)

After this, Padre Imaduddin wrote a book called “Tauzin ul-Aqwal” and continued to repeat his allegations against Islam and the Prophet Muhammad (sa). In response to this book, Hazrat Ahmad (as) wrote the book “Nurul Haqq Part 1” and said that I wrote Barahin-e-Ahmadiyya and challenged your Arabic, but you remained silent. Now you continue to mock the Prophet Muhammad (sa) and I therefore challenge you and every Padre who claim to be maulvis, that you should write a book in response within three months in eloquent Arabic. He (as) said that the Christians can be the judges and if they agree that you have done justice, then I will reward you with 5000 rupees. He (as) said if Imaduddin and the other Padres (the names of the Padres are mentioned in the footnote of Nurul Haqq) cannot answer within three months, and continue to abuse the Prophet Muhammad (sa) and Islam, then their reward is 1000 curses.

Do those who spend day and night abusing the Qur’an and the Prophet Muhammad (sa) deserve the Blessings of Allah or His Curse? What does common sense tell us? The love of the Prophet Muhammad (sa) tells us that they deserve the curse of Allah.

Allah the Almighty States:

إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يَكْتُمُونَ مَا أَنْزَلْنَا مِنَ الْبَيِّنَاتِ وَالْهُدَىٰ مِنْ بَعْدِ مَا بَيَّنَّاهُ لِلنَّاسِ فِي الْكِتَابِ ۙ أُولَٰئِكَ يَلْعَنُهُمُ اللَّهُ وَيَلْعَنُهُمُ اللَّاعِنُونَ

Those who conceal what We have sent down of Signs and guidance after We have made it clear for the people in the Book, it is these whom Allah curses; and so curse them those who curse. (Chapter 2 Verse 160)

The Qur’an teaches us that such people are under the curse of Allah, the angels, the friends of Allah and the believers altogether. Hazrat Masih Maud (as) only wrote it 1000 times but how many angels are there? If we were to write all of their curses we would not be able to. We would not be able to write all of the curses of the Prophets, auliya (friends of Allah) and believers either.

The work of Padre Imaduddin was so abusive that the newspapers said that if another uprising was to happen like the one of 1857, it would happen because of this book. This was said in both Hindu and Christian newspapers.

Hazrat Ahmad (as) stated:

In Kitabul Bariyyah, page 131 Hazur (as) quotes two newspapers which say that the work of Padre Imamuddin has so much abuse and swear words that if another mutiny was to happen like the one of 1857, his writings would be the reason. This shows us how abusive his works were.

Why Repeat

A dua is meant to be repeated. When a dua is repeated and is from the heart, it has much more of an effect. For example, the Prophet Muhammad (sa) taught us to repeat tasbeeh. It is narrated that the Prophet (sa) stated:

فَسَبِّحَا ثَلاَثًا وَثَلاَثِينَ، وَاحْمَدَا ثَلاَثًا وَثَلاَثِينَ، وَكَبِّرَا أَرْبَعًا وَثَلاَثِينَ

Say ‘Subhan Allah’ thirty-three times, ‘Al hamduli l-lah’ thirty three times, and Allahu Akbar’ thirty four times “ (Sahih al-Bukhari, #5361)

Repetition is important in Islam. We repeat surah al-Fatiha in every rakat and repeat many other prayers as well. This has an impact on the heart.

The Curse was for Muslims

The last allegation of the anti-Ahmadis is that this curse was for the Muslims because the names in the footnote are of Maulvis (Muslim Clerics). This shows that the anti-Ahmadis ignore the entire incident and why these curses were sent. These were maulvis who had become Christians and would spend day and night cursing the Prophet (sa) and mocking the Qur’an.
